Introduction (15 minutes)

Read aloud or project the introductory message:

"As the sun-soaked days of summer begin to fade, the anticipation of a new school year dawns upon us. This year, let's focus on shaping students into individuals with valuable skills and a diploma that holds true worth."

Facilitate a class discussion:

  • What does “a meaningful diploma” mean to you?

  • Do you feel prepared for life after graduation?

  • What skills do you think employers are looking for?

🧠 Direct Instruction (20 minutes)

Teacher-guided mini-lecture covering:

  • The Changing Economy: Why traditional education alone may not be enough.

  • Employable Skills: Overview of high-demand skills in today’s job market (tech, trades, communications, etc.).

  • Soft Skills: Problem-solving, teamwork, communication, time management.

  • Dr. Ben Carson's Journey: From underprivileged beginnings to world-renowned neurosurgeon—through focus, discipline, and skill mastery.

🛠️ Activity: Personal Employability Plan (30 minutes)

Distribute a worksheet or use journals. Have students:

  1. List 3 careers or industries they’re interested in.

  2. For each, write:

    • One required technical skill

    • One required soft skill

    • Required education/certification

    • Average starting salary

  3. Reflect: What personal strengths or interests do you have that match this career?

  4. Create a 1-year action plan to build toward employability in that field (e.g., courses to take, internships, certifications, personal goals).

Optional: Pair up and share your plans for peer feedback.

💬 Group Discussion (15 minutes)

Ask:

  • What role does financial literacy play in preparing for a career?

  • How can we keep learning even after graduation?

  • What are ways we can learn outside of the classroom? (e.g., YouTube, online courses, trade apprenticeships)

💡 Exit Ticket (5–10 minutes)

On a sticky note or index card, students answer:

"What is one skill you commit to developing this year that will help you after high school?"

📦 Extension / Homework Assignment

  • Interview a professional in your desired field (family, mentor, teacher, or community contact). Ask them:

    • What skills helped them succeed?

    • What advice would they give you at your age?

  • Write a 1-paragraph reflection and share with the class next session.

🌐 Technology Integration Ideas

  • Explore Certiport.org for certification options

  • Use NGPF.org for budgeting and career exploration tools

  • Explore local trade school websites for program offerings

🏁 Conclusion

“A diploma without skills is a receipt. A diploma with purpose is a passport. Choose to be employable, adaptable, and unstoppable.”
