Honoring Civic Leadership in Broward County

Honoring Civic Leadership in Broward County

Authors Celeste Ellich and Bob Sutton recently had the honor of presenting former Florida House Speaker and gubernatorial candidate Paul Renner with a signed copy of their book, The Candidate’s Playbook, now available on Amazon.

The presentation was more than a book signing—it was a moment of appreciation and respect for a leader who has consistently demonstrated that every county, every community, and every citizen in Florida matters.

Taking Time for the People

Broward County is often jokingly referred to as “The People’s Republic of Broward County,” a phrase popularized by Florida CFO Blaise Ingoglia to highlight the county’s outsized political influence and unique civic challenges. Whether one agrees with the label or not, there is no denying Broward’s importance in statewide elections and policy discussions.

That is precisely why Paul Renner’s willingness to meet directly with Broward residents carries weight.

In an era when many political figures prioritize polling data and media optics over face-to-face engagement, Renner chose to spend time listening, engaging, and acknowledging the concerns of everyday citizens. That kind of leadership—showing up, listening, and respecting the process—is exactly what The Candidate’s Playbook encourages.

Why The Candidate’s Playbook Matters

Written by Celeste Ellich and Bob Sutton, The Candidate’s Playbook is a practical guide for candidates, campaign teams, and civic leaders who want to run principled, effective campaigns rooted in grassroots engagement and constitutional values. The book emphasizes:

  • Respect for voters, regardless of party or geography

  • The importance of local communities in shaping statewide outcomes

  • Leadership grounded in service, not ego

  • Building trust through transparency and presence

Presenting the book to Paul Renner was a symbolic gesture—recognizing a public servant who has lived many of the principles outlined in its pages.

A Message Bigger Than Politics

At its core, this moment was about gratitude.

Gratitude for leaders who recognize that Broward County is not a punchline—but a vital part of Florida’s civic fabric. Gratitude for conversations rooted in facts, respect, and shared responsibility. And gratitude for the idea that democracy still works best when leaders are willing to meet the people they serve.

As Ellich and Sutton continue their work educating, advising, and empowering future candidates, moments like this reinforce why civic engagement still matters—and why leadership, when done right, still inspires.
