Victory on the Middle River: Celeste Ellich Leads Team to Triumph at Wilton Manors’ 32nd Annual Island City Canoe Race



On Saturday, May 17, 2025, the vibrant community of Wilton Manors gathered along the scenic Middle River to witness the 32nd Annual Island City Canoe Race—a cherished tradition that celebrates both athleticism and community spirit. This year’s race was particularly memorable, as Celeste Ellich and her team of ten paddlers clinched first place, showcasing exceptional teamwork and determination. 


A Race Steeped in Tradition


The Island City Canoe Race is more than just a sporting event; it’s a testament to Wilton Manors’ rich history and communal bonds. The relay-style race commences at the Colohatchee Boat Ramp and winds through the Middle River, concluding at Richardson Historic Park. Along the route, teams navigate exchange points, passing the canoe like a baton in a track relay, emphasizing coordination and strategy.   


The Ellich Team’s Path to Victory


Under the seasoned leadership of Celeste Ellich, the team demonstrated remarkable synergy and endurance. Each member’s commitment to rigorous training and seamless communication was evident as they maneuvered through the river’s challenges with precision. Their victory is not just a win in the record books but a reflection of their collective dedication and Ellich’s inspiring guidance.


Community Celebration


Following the exhilarating race, the city hosted its annual birthday celebration at Richardson Historic Park. Residents and visitors enjoyed a festive picnic, lively DJ performances, and the much-anticipated award ceremony. The Ellich team’s triumph was met with enthusiastic applause, symbolizing the community’s pride in their local heroes.
