The Turning Point: 1920 and the 19th Amendment

In 1920, America reached a defining moment with the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment.

This amendment prohibited denying the right to vote based on sex, officially granting women the constitutional right to participate in elections.

But let’s be clear—this wasn’t just legislation.

It was the result of decades of persistence, sacrifice, and moral conviction.

        •       Over 26 million women gained the right to vote almost immediately

        •       It reshaped American politics and civic participation

        •       It reinforced a core constitutional principle: representation matters

And yet—even after 1920, barriers remained. Many women, especially minority women, still faced obstacles at the ballot box for decades.

Florida’s Role in Women’s Voting Rights

In Florida, the impact was immediate:

        •       Women began registering shortly after ratification

        •       One of the first recorded registrations was in Duval County in 1920

But interestingly—Florida didn’t formally ratify the amendment until 1969, showing how political systems often lag behind the will of the people.

A Modern Story: Nikkie Carter & N-Pursuit

Fast forward to today—and history is still being written.

Entrepreneur and civic advocate Nikkie Carter, through her organization N-Pursuit, represents a new generation of politically engaged women.

Her decision to change her voter registration from Democrat to Republican is more than just a party switch—it reflects:

        •       A reassessment of values

        •       A shift toward economic opportunity and personal responsibility

        •       A growing movement of women reevaluating political alignment based on real-world outcomes

This is exactly what the 19th Amendment was meant to empower:

The freedom to choose—not just to vote, but to think independently.

Leadership Spotlight: Celeste Ellich! In Broward County, leaders like Celeste Ellich have played an active role in:

        •       Political organization and grassroots engagement

        •       Encouraging civic participation

        •       Supporting candidates and initiatives aligned with constitutional values

She represents the type of leadership that keeps local politics connected to the people—especially women who are stepping into leadership roles at increasing levels.

Florida Law: Your Driver’s License = Your Voter Record

Here’s where civic responsibility meets real life.

In Florida, your driver’s license and voter registration are directly connected.

Key Facts:

        •       When you apply for, renew, or update your license, you are given the opportunity to register or update your voter record

        •       Your information can be electronically transferred to the voter system

        •       Party affiliation will NOT change unless you explicitly request it and sign for it

        •       If your license number changes (which now happens more frequently), you should update your voter registration

Translation: If you update your license and ignore your voter status—you may unintentionally create issues with your registration.

Financial & Civic Insight (Bob Sutton Perspective)

Let me be direct:

The same discipline we teach in financial literacy applies to civic literacy.

        •       You track your assets

        •       You monitor your credit

        •       You protect your identity

So why wouldn’t you manage your voter registration with the same level of responsibility?Voting is not just a right—it’s an asset of influence. And like any asset…If you don’t manage it, someone else will.

Final Thought: From Suffrage to Strategy From the women of 1920… To leaders like Nikkie Carter…To organizations like N-Pursuit…

We are witnessing a continued evolution of: Freedom, Responsibility, and Independent thinking. The 19th Amendment opened the door. Today’s women are walking through it with purpose.

Call to Action: Check your voter registration. Update your driver’s license information. Know your party affiliation before primary elections. Encourage the next generation to understand both money AND liberty
