From 24% to 64%: A Heart's Second Chance

Updated: Jun 29

About 4 weeks ago, I was told something no one ever wants to hear: “You have congestive heart failure.” My ejection fraction—the measure of how well my heart was pumping—was down to 24% and had other health concerns. That’s not a typo. It meant my heart wasn’t doing even a quarter of its job.

I was told to report to the emergancy room immediatly. They pulled me from work. Told me to rest. Told me to prepare for a long recovery—if there was going to be one at all; and a possible heart transplant.

But I wasn’t ready to give up. Not on my family, not on my mission, and not on this God-given life. So I made a decision. I would take every breath as a fight. With discipline, prayer, support from Teresa and Celeste, and the grace of good medical care, I gave recovery everything I had. And then… came the miracle.

Four weeks later, I sat for a follow-up echocardiogram with the same technician; who was surprised to see me .... alive. This time the number wasn’t 24%. It was 64%. You read that right—my heart was functioning better than ever. Fully healed. The cardiologist and other doctors told me: “Bob, this is statistically unheard of. Maybe 1% of people recover like this.” Some called it viral. Some called it stress-related. I call it a blessing.

My friend, if you're facing a diagnosis like I was, don’t write yourself off. Fight smart. Fight faithfully. Get second opinions. Clean up your nutrition. And trust that healing is possible.

Because sometimes, the heart just needs a second chance.

Takeaway:If you or someone you love is facing heart failure, here’s what I urge:

  • Ask bold questions. Don’t just accept the first prognosis.

  • Anchor your days in faith and discipline.

  • Follow the protocol—but live like recovery is your full-time job.

  • Give your body what it needs: rest, nutrients, oxygen, belief, and prayer.

Listen. Believe. Measure. Pray! I did—and it changed everything.
